Littleton History
|
The first white settlers came to the area where Littleton stands today in the late 1850´s looking for gold and by farmers homesteading the real estate of fertile land along the South Platte River.
Richard Little, an engineer from New Hampshire who was one of these settlers, came to the area in 1861, looked at the area several miles south of Denver and filed a home stake and other land claims. He then brought his wife, Angeline, in 1862 who had been ill and benefited from the dry climate. They filed a plat in 1872 form their property into the village of Littleton.
Littleton became the temporary county seat of Arapahoe County in 1902 when it was divided into the counties of Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Washington and Yuma. In 1904, the town of Littleton became the permanent county seat in a bid against the town of Englewood.
Littleton, incorporated on March 8, 1890 when the population was only 245 people. Littleton adopted it's charter on July 28, 1959 and had it's Downtown area placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
